Week 5: Where Does Living Stuff Come From 


What question are we investigating?

This week we investigated the questions, "Where does living stuff come from? Where does it go?". 

What did we do in lab to investigate this question?

To begin, we started out with a whole class discussion while reviewing the ways seeds can travel and spread.  We then watched a few videos and created a class list of different ways seeds are dispersed throughout the world. Next, we went over the procedure for the activity that we were about to complete. Each group picked one of the methods of which a seed can be dispersed throughout the land. After choosing a method, each group had to prepare a physical presentation to emulate the seed dispersal. Our group chose the method of seed dispersal traveling through animals, particularly birds. We created a replication of a bird, picked up a seed through the beak to represent the bird eating the seed. We then moved to a different part of the room and dropped the seed out of the bottom of the bird to represent the bird pooping it out. 


What did we figure out?

We found out that there are several different ways seeds can be dispersed all throughout the land. Seeds can be dispersed through fires, fur from animals, being eaten by other animals such as birds, the wind, seed explosion, water and more. We learned that some plants explode and there seeds fly all over spreading them. We also figured out that fire can germinate plants and continue there growth and seed dispersal. Water and wind also play a big part, water can flood and move seeds to different locations, while the strength of the wind can blow seeds to other locations. Birds and other animals can eat, or catch seeds onto their fur and spread them miles away from the source of the plant. 


What are new or remaining question after the investigation? 

I was wondering how fire does not burn the seeds of the plants to ash, is it because the roots are still in the ground so they regrow into new plants?
